Complete Bathroom Remodels • San Antonio and Austin

Planning a bathroom remodel in San Antonio TX? Ask every contractor you talk to one question first: how do you plan to keep water out of my walls? Grout Works has spent more than 30 years getting called into bathrooms where somebody got that part wrong. Failed shower pans. Grout lines gone black. Tile pulling off a wall that was never waterproofed. Three decades of repairing that work is what taught us how a bathroom should be built in the first place.

A Bathroom Remodel Is A Water Problem Before It Is A Design Problem

Every other room in your house stays dry. This one gets soaked on purpose, every day, for as long as you own the place.

That changes the order of operations. Tile and fixtures are the last thing that matters and the first thing everybody talks about. What decides whether your bathroom remodel is still sound in fifteen years is the layer nobody ever sees again.

  • The waterproofing behind the tile.
  • The slope of the shower floor toward the drain.
  • The way the pan ties into the curb.
  • And movement joints, so a shifting South Texas slab does not crack your grout in a straight run.

We build to the assembly methods published in the TCNA Handbook for Ceramic, Glass, and Stone Tile Installation, the reference the tile industry writes for itself. That is the difference between a shower that lasts and a shower somebody gets called back to.

What Your Bathroom Remodel Includes

If your bathroom remodel moves plumbing or adds a circuit, that work gets sequenced and finished before a single tile goes up. At the estimate we walk the room with you and say plainly what your layout needs and who handles each part. Nobody should learn mid-project that a step was missed.

Shower, Tub, Or Both

Most bathroom remodels land in one of three shapes, and the right one usually becomes obvious once we see the room.

Most requested

Convert the tub to a walk-in shower

If nobody has taken a bath in six years, that tub is stealing floor space, and converting lets us build the drainage and waterproofing from scratch.

Same footprint

Rebuild the shower in place

New everything behind and in front of it. The right call when the layout works and the shower has reached the end of its life.

Keep the tub

Replace the surround and floor

Families with small kids often want the tub to stay. We tile the surround, redo the floor, and leave a room that reads as new without touching the plumbing layout.

Aging In Place

Curbless And Low-Threshold Showers

More of our clients are remodeling a bathroom they intend to grow old in, and that changes the build. A curbless entry means no step to catch a toe or a walker wheel. It needs a properly sloped floor and usually a linear drain, which makes it a waterproofing-stage decision rather than something added later.

While we are in the walls, it is cheap to add blocking for grab bars even if you do not want them mounted yet. The federal U.S. Access Board publishes dimensions for accessible bathing facilities. Those standards govern public buildings rather than homes, but they are a sound reference for a bathroom remodel meant to work for the next thirty years.

Tile, Stone, And The Details That Date A Bathroom

Finish choices are where a bathroom remodel either looks considered or looks like a catalog page.

Large format tile on the walls means fewer grout lines and a calmer room. Shower floors want the opposite, because small mosaic conforms to the slope the drain needs. Wet floors also need real slip resistance, which rules out some of the polished tile that looks best in a showroom.

Natural stone is its own discipline and needs the right sealer after install, territory we know from years of stone care work in San Antonio and Austin homes.

One detail worth deciding on purpose: size your niche to the bottles you actually own rather than to a standard rough opening.

Only From Grout Works

The Finish Almost No Remodeler Includes

Most remodelers hand you a beautiful new bathroom with completely unsealed grout. Grout is sand and cement, it is porous, and it drinks whatever hits it. In the wettest room in the house that means a floor looking tired inside a year.

We finish every bathroom remodel with our proprietary color sealer, custom tinted to the shade you choose. It penetrates the grout line instead of sitting on top like a clear coat that yellows and peels, and it never needs reapplication. It is the same finish we put on every tile installation we do.

How Long Will Your Bathroom Remodel Take

A bathroom remodel schedule is set by cure time, not by labor.

Gate 1

Waterproofing cures

Before any tile goes on it. No exceptions.

Gate 2

Mortar cures

Before grout goes in the joints.

Gate 3

Grout cures

Before the color sealer goes down.

A crew that rushes those windows to finish a day early is the reason we spend so much of the year repairing other people’s showers. We give you a real schedule at the estimate, including which days are quiet ones where nobody needs to be in your house.

If you only have one bathroom, tell us at the walkthrough, because it changes how we sequence the work. We protect floors and cabinetry on the way in and clean up daily. You still have to live there while we work.

The Honest Version

Sometimes You Do Not Need A Bathroom Remodel

We would rather tell you that than sell you a room you did not need.

If the tile is sound, the substrate is dry, and the only real problem is that the grout has gone dark and the caulk has given up, you are not looking at a remodel. You are looking at a restoration, and it costs a fraction of the price. A shower restoration or a thorough grout repair can hand you back a bathroom that reads as new.

Thirty years of restoration work means we can tell the difference between a bathroom that needs rebuilding and one that just needs recovering. If that is what we find at the walkthrough, we will say so, and it costs nothing to have us look.

Why Homeowners Hand Us A Whole Room

We have been working in San Antonio and Austin bathrooms since 1994 and we hold a 5.0 rating across our Google reviews. The owner runs the job, not just the invoice. We show up when we say we will, and we do not leave a room at eighty percent to go start the next one.

Discounts are available for military members, veterans, and first responders. Just ask when you call.

Since 1994

Three decades of grout, tile, stone and shower restoration across San Antonio, Austin and the surrounding Hill Country. The remodels are new. The bathrooms are not.

Bathroom Remodel FAQ

Yes, and it is the most common project we are asked about. Converting lets us build the pan, the slope, and the waterproofing from scratch instead of working around what a previous installer left behind.

We find it fairly often, and it is the main reason we do not quote a bathroom remodel sight unseen. If demo exposes rot or a compromised substrate, we stop, show you what we found, and price the repair before building over it. Tiling on top of a wet substrate is how a brand new bathroom fails in two years.

Often, yes. Set aside a loose piece and we will work from the real thing rather than a photo. Discontinued lines are harder, and sometimes the closest match still reads as a patch. We would rather say so up front and talk through alternatives.

Almost always. We protect the path in, contain dust as much as the work allows, and clean up daily. The bathroom being remodeled is out of service for the duration, so if it is your only one, say so early and we will plan around it.

Setting them is included. Supplying them is your call. Plenty of clients pick a vanity and fixtures they love, have them delivered, and we install what shows up.

We tell you exactly what your layout needs and coordinate the trades your project requires, so the sequence is right and nothing gets tiled over. The surfaces, the waterproofing, the shower assembly, and the finish work are ours start to finish. Ask at the walkthrough and we will lay out who does what on your job.
